Maha Shivratri which literally means the ‘The Great Night of Shiva’ is one of the biggest Hindu festivals. This year, Maha Shivratri will fall on February 24, 2017. The festival has been given a lot of importance in Hindu mythology. It is said that the sins of a devotee who celebrates the day with extreme authenticity and devotion are washed away and he achieves moksha. It is also said that it is the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married, thus producing together two supreme forces of the universe.

Celebrations

From the long line of devotees who gratify Lord Shiva with milk and bael leaves to fasting in the name of Lord Shiva, the rituals and customs for Maha Shivaratri are abundant. Worshippers start the day by a bathe in the holy river of Ganga. Hindu women rejoice the day by doing a fast to astound Goddess Parvati. The mother goddess is a symbol of love, fertility, and devotion and impressing the goddess blesses women with marital bliss and prosperous married life. Unmarried women devotees on this day pray to Parvati goddess for a nice husband and married women worship god shiv for the good fortune of their husbands and off-springs.
