Veteran performer Bernard Cribbins, who played in The Railway Children and narrated The Wombles, has passed away. His agent, Gavin Barker Associates, issued the following statement: “His career spanned seven decades with such diverse work ranging from films like The Railway Children and the Carry On series, hit 60s song Right Said Fred, a notorious guest on Fawlty Towers and narrating The Wombles.”
“He worked well into his 90s, recently appearing in Doctor Who and the CBeebies series Old Jack’s Boat.”
“He lost his wife of 66 years, Gill, last year.”
“Bernard’s contribution to British entertainment is without question. He was unique, typifying the best of his generation, and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.”
A career spanning seven decades, Bernard Joseph Cribbins was an English actor and singer. He was 93 years old.

The beloved actor was up in Oldham and after performing on stage, he went on to find success in film and television. He is most known for narrating The Wombles and serving as a longtime host of Jackanory.
He had a lengthy and diverse resume, which included roles in the first Casino Royale and Carry On movies. Along with his roles in Doctor Who and Coronation Street, Cribbins also had a number of top 10 songs, including the comedic song Right Said Fred from 1962.

He portrayed the grandfather of Catherine Tate’s character in the Doctor Who revival of the 2000s, and in 2007, he made an appearance in Voyage of the Damned, one of the most popular episodes of all time that also starred Kylie Minogue and Russell Tovey.
But he is perhaps best known for his part as station porter Albert Perks in the 1970 movie adaptation of The Railway Children, which he played in a moment where the kids meet their father on the train platform.
Gillian McBarnet is the wife of Bernard Cribbins. Cribbins met aspiring actress Gillian McBarnet. From 1955 till her passing on October 11, 2021, they were wed. They didn’t have any kids.

Cribbins passed away on July 28, 2022. His agency released a statement on social media on Thursday informing of his passing.

Bernard Cribbins is responsible for the only scene in Doctor Who that has genuinely made me cry. I was so moved by his performance as Wilf as he was able to express so much emotion with so few words.
