Brian Travers, a saxophonist and founding member of the British pop and reggae band UB40, died Sunday at his home in the United Kingdom, accompanied by his family.

In a heartbreaking message on Facebook, Travers’ renowned “Red Red Wine” band confirmed Travers’ death following a “long and valiant struggle with brain cancer.”


He was 62 years old.


Lesley Travers is the wife of Brian Travers. The couple has 2 children 1 daughter named Lisa and 1 son named Jamie.


Travers co-founded UB40 in 1978 with a group of friends from Birmingham, England. According to a 2018 band retrospective in the Telegraph, they called their band after a form supplied to Brits of the era that included all of the bandmates requesting unemployment benefits.

The band went on to have international singles like “Falling in Love With You” and sell approximately 100 million records globally, as well as chart dozens of Top 40 songs in the United Kingdom.

Travers’ most recent appearance with UB40 was in December 2019 at Birmingham’s Arena Birmingham. Meanwhile, Duncan Campbell, the band’s leader, announced his retirement from music in June at the age of 63, citing health difficulties.

He has fought cancer for a long and heroic struggle. According to the Daily Mail, the musician recently announced that he was facing his second brain tumor procedure in as many years after suffering a seizure before Christmas.

In a message shared on social media, the band said, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our comrade, brother, founding UB40 member and musical legend, Brian David Travers. Brian passed away yesterday evening with his family by his side, after a long and heroic battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with Brian’s wife Lesley, his daughter Lisa and son Jamie. We are all devastated by this news and ask that you respect the family’s need for privacy at this time.”
