In Fort Sumner, New Mexico, Candy Jo Webb, 27, was accused of killing her grandfather and hiding his body in a tool chest before fleeing the state to Florida, officials said.

New Mexico State Police Lieutenant Mark Soriano released a statement stating that in Jacksonville, Florida, Webb was arrested and is now pending extradition to New Mexico.

The leftovers from A.J. Harden was found on the afternoon of Oct. 15, crammed in a tool chest that was then abandoned at Fort Sumner on private land.


She is 27 years old.


Webb was charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, according to the state police press release, and on October 28, an arrest warrant was released.
The statement adds that authorities found that Webb had fled the state to escape capture and the 27-year-old was discovered on November 5 by U.S. marshalls in Jacksonville, Florida. She was arrested and would be taken to New Mexico for extradition.


Webb said she had relocated her grandfather to a nursing home in Texas six months earlier and the two had spoken on the phone in September, according to the outlet’s coverage of the arrest warrant affidavit. She then told police that in Fort Worth, the retirement home was named “Shady Oaks,” but no record of the home was found by detectives.

PEOPLE reported that Webb’s motive for killing Harden was to inherit his lake house, investigators said.

According to the press release, state police conducted an ‘extensive investigation,’ and found that Webb: ‘gave Mr. Harden Xanax and Ambien. After Mr. Harden died, Ms. Webb concealed Mr. Harden’s body in a tool chest. Webb drove the tool chest to 1976 Shenandoah Drive in Fort Sumner where she discarded the body.’

According to the court documents, Webb was reportedly missing since mid-October, after her neighbors found her grandfather A.J Harden’s (82) decomposed remains. When the residents of Fort Summer Chad Abeyta detected a foul odor from a toolbox that was dumped on a nearby property, a complaint against her was lodged.
