Curtis Edward Smith Bio/Wiki
At a bail hearing on Thursday, the Hampton County man named Curtis Edward Smith charged with the allegedly staged attempted suicide shooting of Alex Murdaugh alternated between shivering, sobbing, and rocking as he sat before the court.
Curtis Edward Smith commented at one point, “This is all crap.”
The hearing was placed in a courtroom at the Hampton County Sheriff’s Department in rural Varnville, South Carolina, roughly 70 miles from Charleston.

Smith is an alleged drug dealer and a previous client of Alex’s law company. Alex recently admitted that a 20-year opiate addiction prompted him to plan his own murder.
Maggie, his wife, and Paul, his 22-year-old son, were shot and killed at their house in June.
He is 61 years old.
Curtis Edward Smith Surrendered
Alex surrendered himself to authorities on Thursday and will be arraigned later that day for allegedly conspiring with Smith to commit insurance fraud.
Smith arrived in chains on his feet and wrists, his blond hair matted to his scalp. Two sheriff’s deputies had to assist him to his seat since he was shaky on his feet.
Throughout the hearing, he rocked back in his chair and tapped his feet, which were dressed in black sandals and soiled white socks, frequently, occasionally making grunting noises.
Smith has been charged with aided suicide, high-level aggravated assault, and battery, pointing and exhibiting a firearm, methamphetamine distribution, marijuana possession, insurance fraud, and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.
The amount of his bond was set at $55,000.
