Colorado Climber Daniel Granberg  Found Dead

Sergio Condori Vallejos, a mountain guide with Bolivian Andean Rescue who oversaw a two-day recovery mission that was completed on Sunday, said, “We found Daniel lifeless, seated at the summit. His lungs did not hold out; he couldn’t get up to continue,”

When Granberg experienced a medical emergency, the guides who had accompanied him on the hike sought assistance from rescuers. The body of the American climber was recovered after two days.

Jean Granberg, Granberg’s mother, reported her son died of high-altitude pulmonary distress.

She stated he had had some shortness of breath and a little headache the night before, but nothing that indicated his life was in danger.

She said, “Twenty-four years is not long enough, and I just wish somehow there’d been some kind of warning,”

“If he had felt like he was in danger in any way, he would have come down the mountain. But I think it happened so fast.”

According to employees of the local fire department, his body was then brought to a morgue at a hospital in La Paz. One of Daniel’s high school teachers, Tracy Lightsey, started fundraising to bring his corpse home.

Lightsey said, “The response from people is entirely because this young man was an incredible human, and he touched people wherever he was,”
