Who was Darius Lee? Basketball Player Shot, HBU Athlete Killed In Harlem Shooting

Basketball Player Shot

A man was killed and eight others were injured in an early-morning shooting in Harlem on Monday, according to New York City police. Darius Lee was among nine individuals shot near East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue at the gathering Sunday, in what was a terrible and foreboding prologue to Tuesday’s official start of summer, when city violence generally spikes.

Lee, a 6-foot-6 guard from Harlem who was playing for Houston Baptist University in Texas, was the only one killed, according to police. Lee’s stricken sister, Tiara, told: “He was an innocent kid that was in school playing basketball,”

“He cared about basketball. He decided to stay outside one day, and this is what happens. My brother’s gone,” she said sadly. “Great kid. He’s gone for no reason. I’ve been trying to figure it out myself,” nypost.com reported.

What Happened?

According to preliminary information, officers responded to reports of a gunshot on a pathway along FDR Drive around 12:40 a.m. and discovered five victims shot. They were taken to hospitals to receive medical attention.

According to authorities, four additional people who were shot were sent to hospitals for treatment. According to authorities, a 21-year-old guy was confirmed deceased at a hospital, and six other males and two females were among the injured. At a press conference, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell stated: “This Father’s Day weekend is a weekend where people were supposed to be able to enjoy themselves with their families,”

How Did Darius Lee Die?

Lee was brought to Lincoln Medical Center and pronounced dead there. Before going to Houston, he attended SUNY Sullivan Community College. Chris Williams, who coached Lee at The Bronx’s St. Raymond High School for Boys, said: “He was an amazing young man, starting to get to the height of his athletic potential,”

Wiliams added: “He was the model citizen, a great friend, an amazing kid, He was the best I’ve ever been a part of in my life. He was someone you wanted to root for, work with and work for and go the extra mile for. He’s who I’d want my son to be friends with.”

Wiliams continued: “I know that people say this all the time when you have senseless murders and killings, but he was truly special. I can’t even imagine what his mom is going through.”

Lee scored 52 points in a game this year, according to Williams, and averaged 18 points a game. “Lee was on track to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in December and was recently named HBU Robbie Robertson Male Student-Athlete of the Year,” said the coach.

Investigation

The investigation was still ongoing on Monday, and authorities didn’t have any information about the gathering or what would have prompted the shooting. Although little information regarding possible suspects was revealed right afterward, authorities did say on Twitter that a gun had been discovered at the site. As part of the investigation, the public was asked for tips.
