On July 2, 1955, she married Desmond Tutu.
Tutu had been married to his wife Nomalizo Leah Shenxane for 66 years when he died.
In July of 2015, the couple rekindled their vows. Nomalizo is a nurse, activist, and teacher from South Africa.
She is the co-founder of the South African Domestic Workers Association and the Desmond Tutu Peace Center, which she founded in 1988.
She worked as an assistant at the Universities of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland between 1970 and 1972. She was the director of the South African Institute of Race Relations’ Domestic Workers and Employers Project from 1976 to 1984.
In 2000, the National Louis University bestowed an honorary doctorate on her and Tutu.
In 2009, the We Are Family Foundation presented her and Tutu with the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Peacemaker Award.
How Did Desmond Tutu Die?
Tutu died of cancer on December 26, 2021, in the Oasis Frail Care Centre in Cape Town.
