Grady obtained a BS in nursing and biology from Georgetown University in 1974, a Master of Science in Nursing from Boston College in 1978, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University in 1993 after graduating from Livingston High School.

Grady has extensive experience in nursing, clinical research, and clinical care, with a focus on HIV. Between 2010 to 2017, she served on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues as a Commissioner.
