According to TMZ, authorities discovered Cowie’s death on Sept. 3 in New York City after a friend discovered him face down in a bedroom.

The animal trainer lived in Oklahoma, so it’s unknown why he was in New York. There were no narcotics detected at the site, and a toxicology report will be conducted.

He was 53 years old.

Cowie was most known for his roles in the Netflix original series Tiger King. He had worked at Joe Exotic’s zoo for eight years and was one of his longtime animal keepers.

Cowie was a longtime animal caretaker for now-imprisoned star Joe Exotic on the reality show.

Cowie stayed and looked after his huge cats at the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park after Joe, 58, was sentenced to prison.

He went on to testify against the animal wrangler who was accused of abusing and killing some of his animals.

After being involved in an automobile collision in Oklahoma earlier this year, Cowie was arrested for DUI. He pleaded guilty and was scheduled to be sentenced soon after the incident, but he did not appear for his court.

How Did Erik Cowie Die?
