George Gonzalez, an Army veteran and member of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, was recognized by the Defense Department on Wednesday as the police officer slain in an incident outside the Pentagon on Tuesday.

According to the FBI, the tragic encounter began around 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, when a man exited a bus at the transit hub just outside the Pentagon and assaulted Gonzalez with a knife without provocation.

According to the agency, the attacker “mortally wounded” Gonzalez in the ensuing battle before shooting himself with the police officer’s service pistol.

He was around 33-35 years old.

According to the FBI, other police officers then engaged the attacker, who died on the spot.

During the event, a civilian bystander was injured and sent to the hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.” Later, the onlooker was released.

Austin William Lanz, 27, most recently of Acworth, Ga., was identified as the attacker by the FBI, which is leading the investigation into the event.

Early Wednesday, POLITICO reported that the attacker was shot on the spot and did not penetrate the Pentagon, which had been placed on lockdown.

After cops secured the incident, the building reopened approximately an hour and a half later.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement, “I extend my deepest sympathies to the family, loved ones and colleagues of the Pentagon Force Protection Officer who died as a result of injuries he received this morning,”

Officers from various departments lined the sidewalks outside George Washington University Hospital in D.C. later Tuesday to pay tribute to their deceased colleague. There was a casket draped in an American flag.

The officer’s death was confirmed by the Pentagon Force Protection Agency on Tuesday, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin extended his sorrow. The Pentagon’s flags will be lowered to half-staff.
