After the youngster failed to return home for dinner, his parents dialed 911.
James’ body was discovered by his father just after 7:30 p.m. that evening.
The animal had been discarded on the side of the road just three weeks before the vicious attack, and the family had rescued it.
According to KJRH, the dog never showed any signs of hostility.
Creek County Sheriff Bret Bowling told KOCO, “It doesn’t look like any foul play. Our preliminary indications or investigations indicate is some kind of animal.”
At the time of the incident, Shannon Edison, a neighbor, was celebrating her birthday.
She said to KOTV, “We knew something was wrong. As a mother you know that scream if anybody has ever heard that scream, you know that scream.”
Shannon described the incident as “heartbreaking,” adding, “No family will ever have to go through something like that.”
“I just couldn’t believe it, honestly. It was something that was unfathomable.”
On Facebook, James’ father, Michael McNeelis, wrote an emotional homage to his son.
He said, “He was so full of life and light and he was going to change the world. And he still is..”
“His light will change the world. We feel alone and lost without him and we’re doing all we can but it’s just hard..”
“Everything just hurts without my little boy here.”
Hannah, James’ mother, has a Facebook biography that reads, “James Alexander McNeelis. Always and forever, and even ever after. Gonna miss you forever.”
A GoFundMe page has been set up to aid with James’ memorial and cremation costs.
