On Saturday afternoon, authorities discovered and retrieved a female body suspected to be tied to Lightweight contender Felix Verdejo from a lagoon near Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Authorities were alerted to a female found in the San José lagoon near the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge in the Carolina region shortly before noon local time, according to El Vocero Newspaper. The body is thought to be that of 27-year-old Keishla Marlen Rodrguez Ortiz, who is believed to be the girlfriend of fighter Verdejo, who is also 27-years-old. She had been missing since Thursday morning.

As we previously reported, the young woman has been missing since she failed to show up for work on Thursday and has not returned any of her family’s calls or texts.

Rodriguez Ortiz’s mother informed San Juan CIC investigators that her daughter had reported her pregnancy to her and had gone to tell Verdejo.


She was 27 years old.

How Did Keishla Marlen Rodríguez Die?

Rodriguez Ortiz’s relatives, who had been pleading with Verdejo and the public to assist in the search for Keishla for the previous two days, arrived at the scene with authorities once it was confirmed that it was a blond female matching her general description.

They waited for several hours as forensic technicians and a local prosecutor looked for signs and proof of the death in and around the water.

According to El Vocero, the body was removed about 5 p.m. local time and taken to the Institute of Forensic Sciences crime lab in San Juan for further identification and investigation. However, a San Juan police source told El Nuevo Dia on Friday that they have mobile phone records of several calls from Rodriguez Ortiz’s phone to Verdejo’s phone on Thursday morning around the time she vanished.

Verdejo’s wife also announced the couple’s relationship to them on Thursday night.

The police investigation brought them to the Pueblo Indio neighborhood of Puerto Rico on Friday afternoon, near La Central in Canóvanas. They discovered Rodriguez Ortiz’s car, a dark gray 2016 Kia Forte, abandoned near Verdejo’s house. Marlen Rodriquez Ortiz’s wallet, ID, iPad, and other personal items were also found in the car, according to El Vocero. They also said that a fire-rescue dive team had searched the waters around the car for her but had come up empty-handed.

Captain Diaz-Munoz of the San Juan CIC said on Friday afternoon that Verdejo was not a suspect at the time of the search and that he was free to leave. Verdejo was described as a “person of interest” in the woman’s disappearance by him.


Investigators from San Juan went to Verdejo’s house Saturday night, possibly to seize the SUV for further examination and investigation into the death of Rodriguez Ortiz.
