On TikTok, a 103-year-old great-grandmother named Madie Scott recounted how she used to work 14 hours a day picking cotton on a Georgia farm.

Madie Scott, who was born in the South in 1917, informed her granddaughter, Shanika Bradshaw, that she started working in 1929 when she was just 12 years old.

Scott would go to the farm every day between 3 a.m. and 5 p.m. to harvest cotton, which was subsequently used to produce garments.

For her effort, the centenarian was paid only 50 cents per day, and she did it for four years.

She mentioned the project in a TikTok video published by Bradshaw earlier this month, which has received 3.5 million views.

The lively 103-year-old grandmother tells her granddaughter, You got to know how to work. When you get used to picking cotton, you pick it, you know how to pick it. I worked like a dog.”

Scott traveled to Florida when he was 16 years old to work as a sharecropper because the pay was better.

Since her video went viral, the vivacious grandmother has become an unexpected TikTok sensation.

In an effort to bring attention to black history, Bradshaw has begun to record and share other recordings of her interactions with Scott. Her films now receive hundreds of thousands of views on a regular basis.

Scott later said that she worked alongside her sister on the Georgia cotton farm during her time there.

She said to BuzzFeed, “I was picking cotton all day,”

“That’s all there was to do. You can work in the house [babysitting or cleaning], but if you work in the field you make the most money.”

Scott spent 40 years as a nanny for an affluent family in Miami Beach after working as a sharecropper. She has also worked as a cook in the past.

Scott’s other employment likewise required manual labor, but when she retired in her 80s, she found herself without work.

She does believe, however, that today’s children are unaware of their good fortune.

She said, “Ain’t none of these young people will have to go through what I went through to get where I am now,”

“Oh Lord, I wish we had that — how ya’ll got everything laid out for you [in life] and you know where it’s going. When I was coming up, we didn’t know where we were going, all we knew how to do was work.”
