A suspect named Rico Smith III has been arrested in the shooting death of a two-year-old boy named Deon Stover in Winston-Salem on Friday night.
Following the death of Deon Stover, Rico Smith III was charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to police.
Smith and his girlfriend were babysitting Stover that night when he accidentally discharged a handgun while attempting to empty it, striking Stover, according to Winston-Salem police.
Rico Smith III is 19 years old and Deon Stover was 2 years old.
Who was Deon Stover?
Around 7:40 p.m. on Friday, police were called to a home on the 100 block of Martindale Road in reference to a gunshot.
Police said they didn’t find anyone when they arrived, but they later heard that Stover had been driven to the hospital.

The automobile was discovered by police on Highway 311 near Interstate 40, and EMS was dispatched promptly. The victim was taken to the hospital by paramedics.
According to investigators, the youngster was eventually declared deceased at the hospital.

Smith surrendered on Tuesday and was released after posting a $15,000 secured bond.
