Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates, died at the age of 73, leaving a worth of £120 billion. According to state news agency WAM, the long-serving ruler of Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s wealthiest emirate, died on Friday. Since 2004, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has served as President of the United Arab Emirates, Emir of Abu Dhabi, and Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Since the late 1980s, he has also served as chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council. The Sheikh also served as the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, which oversees assets worth £571 billion.

Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was 73 years old. He was born on 7 September 1948 in Al Ain, Trucial States.

According to official media, he had been suffering an ailment for some years. In 2014, Sheikh Khalifa suffered a stroke and had surgery. In the years since, he has been rarely seen in public. The country will now be in mourning for 40 days.

Wam issued a statement: “The Ministry of Presidential Affairs condoles the people of the UAE, the Arab and Islamic nation and the world over the demise of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE,”
